Writing files to a CD
Computers are indespensible these days while many novice users still have trouble with basic day to day tasks. Today, we will be focusing on burning files to a CD in Windows XP. We are using Windows XP because the majority of the market still uses Windows XP even though we are going on to 8 years past its introduction.
To most intermediate to advanced users, creating a CD is a simple task. You copy your files onto the CD drive, click on "Write files to CD", then insert your CD. Thats it!
Unfortunetly, from my experience in training beginning computer users, that 3 step process is not 3 steps. It is more like at least 11-12 steps per file.
Because most beginners will be using "My Documents" to store their files, we will stick to that.
Now, the good stuff! Notice the tips and shortcuts that I use during the tutorial. This process can save you alot of time and hassle when transferring files because it allows you to transfer multiple files.
Before we begin, you should have your Desktop visible with no open windows in sight. This is so that you can see the "My Documents" folder. If you cannot see anything on the Desktop including the icons, you will have to access the "My Documents" folder through the Start Menu in the lower left hand corner of your screen. It is also important that you know how to access "My Computer" in the same way. Make sure that you know how to get to "My Documents" and "My Computer" before we start.
Also, you need to make sure that your CD drive can burn CDs and that you have your CD-R disc ready. You can usually tell if your CD can burn CDs by checking the CD drive's label in "My COmputer" for the letters RW. So, in "My Computer", it should say CD-RW or DVD/CD-RW. If it says CD Drive or DVD Drive you will not be able to do the final step (Step 11).
Step 1: Open "My Documents".
Note: this usually means tapping twice quickly on the "My Documents" icon without moving the mouse.
Step 2: Left click on a file that you want to write to the CD.
Note: this step selects the file you clicked on.
Step 3: Press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard.
Note: this will allow you to select multiple files.
Step 4: Left click on another file that you want to write to the CD.
Note: this is the same as step 2, repeat this step as neccessary until you have all of your files selected. You may have to use the scroll bar to the right of the window in order to scroll up and down to see all of he files.
Step 5: Release the Ctrl key on your keyboard.
Note: now that we are finished selecting files we can release this key.
Step 6: Right click on any of the selected files that you want to write to the CD.
Note: make sure that you do not right click on blank space or a file that is not selected since the selection will disappear. If you accidentally clicked off a selection you will have to repeat steps 2-6
Step 7: Left click on "Copy"
Note: this puts your files safely in the computers memory
Step 8: Open "My Computer"
Note: this will allow you to access your drives.
Step 9: Open the CD drive in "My Computer"
Note: this will bring you to the place where you can store your files before they are written to your CD.
Step 10: Right click anywhere in the blank white space
Note: this shows you your options with the CD drive, i.e. what actions you can take.
Step 11: Left click on "Paste"
Note: this takes the copied files in memory and stores them temporarily in a place where they will be written to CD.
Step 12: Left click on "Write these files to CD" link.
Note: this will be off to the left of your window. If it is not listed, then left click on the "File" menu in order to show the option.
Step 13: Insert physical CD into CD drive on the front of your computer.
Note: without this step you will not be able to continue.
Step 14: Review and adjust label as you see fit. I would suggest labeling it "My First CD".
Note: this step cannot be changed or undone.
Step 15: Left click on OK.
DONE!!! Congratulations, you have just made your own CD!!!

This world is fast paced, time consuming, and plain frustrating when you do not know how to do or find something.
